Macramé is a wonderfully creative and relaxing hobby that allows you to transform simple cords into beautiful, intricate designs. Imagine the satisfaction of knotting together different patterns to create stunning wall hangings, plant hangers, or even unique jewellery.

What’s so enticing about macramé is its accessibility—anyone can start with just a few basic knots and gradually learn more complex techniques. You don’t need fancy tools or equipment; just some cord, a pair of scissors, and a little space to work. Plus, it’s incredibly versatile! You can personalize your creations with colours, textures, and sizes to match your home or style.

If you are wanting to read some books before deciding to hop on the hobby, why not have a search in our library catalogue? We have a range of macramé books to choose from. Our friendly staff can help you find them on our shelves or online.

Getting started with macramé is easy and doesn’t require many tools.

  1. Cord: The most important material! Cotton cord is a popular choice, but you can also use jute, hemp, or synthetic fibres. Start with something around 3-5mm thick. You can find this product at a variety of stores.
  2. Scissors: A good pair of sharp scissors is essential for cutting your cord.
  3. Measuring Tape or ruler: To measure your cord accurately, ensuring you have enough for your projects.
  4. Clip or Clamp: These can help hold your work in place. You can also use a dowel or a branch for wall hangings.
  5. Optional: If you’re feeling adventurous, you can add beads, rings, or other embellishments to enhance your designs!
  6. Macramé Book: Find a macramé title at one of our library branches so you can start your creative macramé journey!
